MY ART RADIATES EMPATHY FOR THE UNDERPRIVILEGED IN THE SOCIETY- SEGUN OKEWUMI

Every artist palette has an encoded message, messages intended for many purposes including appealing, provoking or attempt to respond to an issue.

ÒGÚNÁ KAN

A sculptor per excellence whose expertise and dexterity in handling sculpture projects are of top notch. With many exhibitions and commissions to his credit, Segun’s palette shows how diversified and rich the Africa palette is irrespective of location, training and cultural beliefs.

EYINJÚEGÉ

By recreating and repurposing discarded wastes to joyful art forms which art patrons couldn’t resist, Segun aim to brings freshness and uniqueness to the social reforms by visually narrating his philosophies through his creations.

UNDETERRED

His new exploration of local iron pots which are made from recycled casted aluminum wastes which is basically use for cooking in the african home setting is a new phase of the artist creativity exploration.

Works such as EYINJÚEGÉ (Fragile Soul) which was inspired by the artist personal life while growing up is a called to action for all of us due to the loneliness our loved ones may be feeling.

The artist expressed that “i grew up as an only child, so inherently, most of my life was centered around me. My parents taught me to play well with others and to share my toys, but I was still an only child who didn’t have to share my parent’s attention with siblings. As great as my childhood was, I always wanted brothers and sisters.”

Other works in his palette includes; “OMOLASO” a piece which highlights the reciprocal relationship between parents and their wards. The artist used this art piece to counsel, motivate, encourage and narrate the expectations of the African parents from their children when they are old just as they cared for these children when they were babies.

OMOLASO

ÒGÚNÁ KAN visually express the undivide attention a lone child enjoy from his or her parents most especially the jealously protection and care from the mother while UNDETERRED reminds us of the inportance of training the girl child. Nothing should be the price for the girl child education and the ones that have single out themselves by defying any challenges in their quest for education should be celebrated.
